ALEX OVECHKIN!
EARLY LIFE

Alex Ovechkin was born September 17, 1985. His parents were sport's stars including his older brother Sergi Ovechkin. His dad Mikhail Ovechkin was a soccer player for his country Russia, his mother Tatyana Ovechkina who won two gold medals in the olympics for her basketball team that's Russia. While he was growing up his parents always incouraged Alex to play basketball or soccer. Alex was never in big interest in those sports he was more interested in hockey. Alex started to like hockey when he was just two years old in the soviet store when he grabed a hockey stick from the store and refused to let it go. Whenever a hockey game would turn on Alex drop everything in his hands and stare at the game, Alex always considered superstar captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins Mario Lemieux as a role model for him whenever his parents tried to change the channel he would scream. Alex's older brother, Sergi purposely showed hockey to Alex, and Alex then joined a hockey camp at age 8 but at age ten his older brother died in a car accident.



CAREER

Alex Ovechkin first started playing in the big leagues at age 16 as the left winger for the Russian team Dynomo Moscow. He had 64 points at the end of his season. By the time it was NHL's 2004 entry draft pick Alex was picked by the Washington Capitals as the first overall pick. In his first game Alex scored two goals to help the Capitals win the game 3-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. One game in that season was Alex's greatest goals he has ever done before. He was against the Phoenix Coyotes when he scored a goal past goalkeeper Brain Boucher on his back facing away from the net with one hand on his stick and he hooked the puck right into the net. In the 07-08 season Alex lead his team the Capitals to the stanley cup playoffs. But they ended up losing to the Philadelphia Flyers with Alex scoring 9 points. Alex got his first career hat trick (three goals in one game) against the Anaheim Ducks in his 05-06 season. Later in his 08-09 season he got his first career playoff hat trick against the Pittsburgh Penguins. One of Alex's great honers were when he was sponsored to be on the video games NHL 07 & NHL 2k10 front covers. Early in the season of the 08-09 season Alex returned to Moscow to help with his grandfather. Alex has injured a couple of players in his career like Tim Gleason, and Brain Campbell. One honer from his team was mid-way through the 09-10 season Alex was elected as the capitan of his team aftar former capitan Chris Clark who was traded to another team. That season that he was elected capitan was the season that he lead the Washington Capitals to the number one spot in the whole league and one them the President Trophy that goes to the team who's number one out of the whole league. But ended up losing that following playoffs to the Montreal Candiens in game 7, in round one.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER
Alex Ovechkin first started as a junior for Russia at age 16 and got a bronze medal. His other medal was a bronze again but this time he played in the men's
Russia team during 2007.

OFF-ICE

One thing that really inspired him was the key to the city of Washington. He recieved this because he was the most talented sportsplayer in the city and people loved him so aftar the 2008 season the mayor Adrian M. Fenty handed Alex the key to the city. Now there is this rivalry between the Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin. Now they began friends on the Russian 2006 Winter Olympic Games but very soon it worn out and became bitter rivals. It seemed to all start out when Alex punched Malkin's own agent. From then on they weren't very friendly to eachother. On the Russian Olympic team Alex would never set up Malkin for a pass and Malkin would never set up Alex for a pass. During the 08-09 season Alex recieved some criticism for Alex's celebrations. Though Alex really didn't care what people thought of his celebrations, though soon he started relax with his celebrations and his coaches started to tell him to stop with cockey celebrations. Later people thought it over and decided that Alex Ovechkin was the 48th most powerful person in Washington D.C. During 2009 they also decided that for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games he would be the ambassador for the Russian team.

AWARDS

Alex Ovechkin has won a Calder Memorial Trophy (award to the rookie who plays the best in his first year) in 2006, he won the Kharlamov Trophy (goes to the greatest Russian player) 5 times in a row 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. He also won 2 Ted Lindsay Awards (most outstanding player) in 2008, and 2009, he also got 2 Hart Memorial Trophy (awarded to most valuable player) in 2008, and 2009 as well as getting a Art Ross Trophy (awarded to player with most points in the regular season) in 2008 with 112 points. Finally he received 2 Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (awarded to player with most goals at the end of the regular season) in 2008 with 65 goals, and 2009 with 56 goals
