You must be thinking, Who is Annie Moore? Well, Annie Moore was the first immigrant to set foot on Ellis Island. Not much is known about her life before she came to Ellis Island.
Before Ellis Island
We do know, Annie was born in Ireland, in the village of Cobh, County of Cork. In Ireland she was living with her 4 brothers, her mom, and her dad. Due to the hard times, it was hard for Annie's parents to put food on the table. Like others, they had decided they were going to go to America, in hopes of a better life. But they only had enough money for 4 poeple, so Annie's 2 oldest brothers, and her parents went to America. She was left to live with some relatives in Ireland. Finnally after 3 years, she got the tickets for the trip to America.
The S.S. Nevada
She was waiting with her 2 brothers, Phillip, and Anthony, to board the boat to America. They were waiting to board the S.S. Nevada, on December 20, 1891.Once they got on the boat, they were on sterage for 12 days.
This is a side view of what Ellis Island loks like now.
Ellis Island
When Annie Moore walked off the ferry to Ellis Island, some of the buildings were still being constructed. Because the island just opened, Annie Moore was the first on the island. She got a $10 gold piece for being the first, and as a bonus, it was her 15th birthday! When she finished the examinations, she met her parents outside and they took her and her brothers to their home on the Lower East side of Manhattan.
As An Adult
Years later, she married a baker named Joseph Schayer, and had 11 kids. Although, only 5 of them made it to adulthood. Not long after that, she died of heart failure, at the age of 47. She was buried in an unmarked grave at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials
Since she was the first to set foot on Ellis Island, they made a statue of her. They also have a statue of her in Cobh, Ireland, where her journey began.
