Black widows
Feeding and hunting

The black widow is a very dangerous and venomous spider. It has it's own unique hunting styles. When it finds prey it injects poison into it which paralyzes the victim. Then the black widow injects special chemicals into it's prey which decomposes the flesh. Finally the black widow sucks the decomposed flesh from it's prey's lifeless body.

Breeding

The black widow got it's name because after mating the female black widow will eat the male because it only needs to mate once to lay many eggs. The female black widow can lay from four to nine egg sacs which hold up to nine-hundred eggs. The eggs hatch fourteen to thirty days later. The spiderlings leave the web after hatching and mature in two to three months and molt their skin three to eight times.

Habitat

Black widows live in most of the western hemishpere. They make their webs and live in warm dark places. You can mostly find them in deserts, attics and sometimes trash cans.

Predators

The mud-dauber wasp and the spider wasp are the only predators of the black widow. The mud-dauber wasp captures the black widow and feeds it to it's new borns. The spider wasp inject poison into the black widow and feeds it to it's new borns. Also if the weather goes from cold to warm the black widow might die.

Characteristics

Female black widows are black with a red hour glass shape on them. The males can be black or brown. The females are about one inch long and the males are about half that size. All spiders in the widow family are venomous but not all of them hurt humans.

Heartworm
Infection

Heartworm usually infects dogs but it can also infect cats, wolves, coyotes, foxes, ferrets, sea lions, and rarely humans. It can affect those animals no matter their age or gender. Heartworm is a threat in every state in the US and almost every countries.
Dogs: When a dog is infected by heartworm it causes the dog to cough, lose appetite, have trouble breathing and tire easily
Cats: When a cat is infected by heartworm it causes the cat to cough, experience resptory distress, and vomit.

Cause

Heartworm can only be transferred by mosquitoes. The mosquitoe will bite an infected animal and suck up the heartworm larvea. Then it will bite an animal and spread the heartworm into that animal's blood stream which infects it.

Prevention

It's better to prevent heartworm than to treat it. If your animal is infected there is a FDA approved treatment but it doesn't always work. There are also many medicines to prevent heartworm.

Evolution

Heartworms go through several stages before becoming adults. The heartworm needs two host to complete it's evolution and the mosquitoe counts as one, the infected animal counts as the second
