Koalas by CD

Appearence

Koalas are 70-90 centimeters (24 inches-36 inches) and 4-9
kilograms (9-20 pounds). They can also get to 13 years old.
It depends on where they live of what they look like. So they
are gray-brown, redish baige, gray, etc.

Origin

Koalas are not bears. They are not placental or eutherian mamals,
but Marsupials. It is incorrect to say "koala bears" simply just "Koala."
The name Koala comes from the Aboriginal word meaning no drink because they eat Eucaluptus instead of drinking water.

Endangered or Not?

Koalas are endangered. This is because by their habitat more and more people are coming there to build houses. Other reasons is because of road kill and wild animals killing them. They are also threatened by the carbon dioxide taking the right nutrients out of the Eucalyptus leaves that they feed on.

What They Eat and Does It Effect Them?

Koalas eat Eucalyptus leaves and nothing else. Theyy can eat 500g of Eucalyptus leaves a day. They only eat their favorite Eucalyptus leaves that they pick out. They use their hands to eat. There is a toxic species of Ecualyptus that has envolved a highly aggresive sub-species called the Dropbear. It's not to serious because more people go to the hospital for beestings. If you ever do get attacked by a Dropbear you will only have a few scratches.

Habitat

They are native in Austailia (the eastern and soutern costiol regions) from near Adelaide to the southern part of the peninsula of Cape York. Koalas also live in trees.

Communcation

Koalas use sounds, but it depends on what kind of sounds they make.
If it is mother and baby the use soft clicking and murmuring that is cute.
But, if they are scared they will shreak accompanied with a lot of shaking.

Family

Koalas are solitary animals which means they do not live in pacts. The
closest thing to a family is when the baby stays with the mother for a few
weeks.

Movement

They are in the middle runners. They run up the trees at a mediocre speed
(an exaptional speed). Also, on the ground they can run the same speed
short distances.
